- '040 Macintosh or better (PowerMac or better is recommended)
- 24 Meg RAM
- 60 Meg disk space
- Marathon Infinity (any version)
The EMR Infinity package contains all the files and installers needed for playing Excalibur, provided you already own a copy of Marathon Infinity, and you own a Macintosh fast enough to run Marathon Infinity (PowerMac or better recommended).
The following files are included with the EMR Infinity package:
- Excalibur Installer
- Graphics
- Sounds
- Images
- Merlin's Prologue
- Morgana Map
- Morgana (Physics Model)
- Minstrel
- Read Me
- Documentation
The following are other EMR items available for download (and on the EMR CD):
STEP 1:
A) If you own the EMR CD, open up the CD icon (if not already open).
B) If you download the EMR package from the internet, drop the downloaded file onto Stuffit Expander, and a volume should show up on your desktop called Excalibur Image. Double-click on this icon.
STEP 2:
Drag the folder EMR Infinity to a location of your choice onto your hard disk.
STEP 3:
Open the folder EMR Infinity (the one you just copied onto your hard disk).
STEP 4:
Double-click on the file EMR Installer, choose your Marathon Infinity application, then choose the location to save the patched application (choose the folder EMR Infinity on your hard disk).
NOTE: If the patched application (called Excalibur 2.0) did not get saved to your EMR Infinity folder, be sure to move it there.
SUMMARY:
If you performed the above correctly, there should now be an application called Excalibur 2.0 in your folder EMR Infinity. You are now ready the launch the application. See the picture below for a sample of what you should see:
NAVIGATION: Once you have successfully installed EMR Infinity, double-click on the Excalibur 2.0 application to play the game. EMR Infinity uses it's own special keys for game navigation, defined as follows:
Forward Keypad 8 Backward Keypad 5 Turn left Keypad 4 Turn right Keypad 6 Glance left Keypad 7 Glance right Keypad 9 Sidestep left Keypad 1 Sidestep right Keypad 3 Look up Up Arrow Look down Down Arrow Look straight ahead Keypad 0 Map mode toggle Keypad . (period) Next weapon Keypad + Prev weapon Keypad - Primary Trigger Space-bar Secondary Trigger Command Action Control Run mode toggle Caps Lock
For those of you who prefer the Bungie configuration, there is a default set available in the preferences to change the keys to Bungie's keys. To use Bungie's keys, or to change the keys to your own customized keys, click on Preferences from your game menu, then choose Controls from the popup menu.
NET GAMES: EMR Infinity comes with several net games to challenge your friends and family with. To play a net game, you computers must be networked. One player chooses Gather Netgame from the menu, and the others choose Join Netgame. Net games in EMR work just like they do in EMR Infinity (the only difference is the color schemes).
INTRO MOVIE: EMR Infinity comes with its own intro movie when you choose Embark from the main menu. To skip the movie, simply press the RETURN key while the movie is playing. To prevent the movie from playing for all subsequent games, remove or rename the file Merlin's Prologue.
SKIP LEVELS: EMR Infinity also comes with some chapter selection levels that allow you to start from any level with an ample supply of weapons and ammunition. To utilize this feature, hold down option and control while clicking on EMBARK, and type 42 as the level to skip to. This level stocks you up on supplies, then allows you to choose which section to start (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th), and from there you can choose the specific level.
NOTE: Some levels remove your supplies on purpose when entering the level, so you may start off empty-handed regardless of taking the above steps.
There are known problems playing EMR with the Infinity engine. We have made every effort to fix problems that are within our control, but some problems may still be experienced. The following table lists some possible problems you may run into, along with solutions or work-arounds.
Problem Solution No Sound
- Go to Preferences, choose Sound from the popup, and be sure that all the sound selections are turned on except for the one labeled "No Sound (Don't Do It)." This last box must be unchecked (if checked, the game will attempt to activate 16-bit sounds which do not exist in EMR Infinity).
- Make sure there is enough memory allocated to the game to support playing all the sounds.
- Make sure there is enough memory available to the system for the sound manager to work properly (quit other open applications if necessary).
HUD display color problems Every so often, the Infinity engine will "hiccup" on your HUD when doing a save. If, after you save your game, your HUD's color seems distorted (colors are almost inverted), simply quit the game, then start it up again, and resume from your last saved game.System freeze/crash
- If your system hangs when you go to save a game, it may be caused by not having enough memory to save the game. Try allocating more memory to your application.
- If your system hangs when switching from one level to the next level, it may be caused by not having enough memory to load the new level. Try allocating more memory to your application.
- If you are on an '040 Mac, you may be playing a level which experiences a zero-divide problem in the map. Get the Ignore Zero Divide application to fix this problem for you. You can get it from the EMR tools package, or from the Marathon Archives web site.
- You may not be using all the correct EMR files. If a wrong map or wrong graphics (aka, shapes) or wrong sounds file is assigned, an item may be referenced without supporting data thereby causing your system to hang. Go into Preferences, choose Environment, and be sure all the correct EMR files are selected.
Objects disappearing Every so often, you may notice a sprite or scenery object disappear from a certain angle, but then reappear from another angle. This type of problem is hard to control, and is partly due to a long-standing bug in the engine. It shouldn't cause a problem with game play, so just take note of the object and keep playing.Scenario troubles If you are having problems getting through the scenario, such as getting stuck on a level, not knowing what to do next, not knowing how to win a battle, etc., you may want to check out the EMR Spoiler Guide. Please only use the guide if you absolutely have to, as using the guide may rob you of certain pleasures that can only be experienced exploring the maps on your own.
